[00:01] REENA JADHAV: Hi everyone its Reena here with Dr. Neal Barnard and his amazing book reversing diabetes problem and we are talking about the chapter on how do you maintain this perfect diet which is going to reverse diabetes and get you back your health in a highly imperfect world. Doctor Neal what are some great tips and tools that we can all use.
[00:21] DR NEAL BARNARD: You know people eat out more than ever before. It used to be that people would eat out at a restaurant once a month because they would save out some money and they would split. Nowadays it can be almost every day that people are doing or we are traveling we are on the road and tip one think international. What I mean is if you are going to a restaurant that features Italian cuisine, they have all kinds of dishes that happen to be easily done without animal products at all. You could have the spaghetti with the carbonara sauce, marinara sauce whatever they grow vegetables. Chinese they got all kinds of things made from rice and vegetable and tofu. Japanese yeah there is fish sushi but that is not what we are talking about, why not have the sushi wrapped up with cucumbers and other things the delectable salads. How about Mexican, they can make you veggie fajitas, burrito so think international. There are so many cuisines that have healthy foods as part of their staples. Now the next challenge I am going fast foods. Is there something that I can eat? You have to be a little disserting because there is a lot of bad stuff there too but more and more fast food chains do have veggie burgers. If you are going to a submarine sandwich place, there are more than happy to leave out some meat and cheese and to pile it high with lettuce, tomatoes, hallas, cucumbers, spinach, and a little red wine vinegar you are going to be okay. At the Mexican fast food place skip the meat taco; have the bean burrito whole made cheese you will be okay. When you are travelling, when you check into a hotel what you can often find is if you request a refrigerator you can stop at the store. If you happen to like out and get a whole kitchenette no problem whatsoever. If you are travelling internationally, call the airline 48 hours before you fly let them know you want a vegan meal, they will have it for you, and you are going to get served first so those are just a few tips that will help you get through this unfortunately imperfect world you will be able to master it.
[02:17] REENA JADHAV: Absolutely you know on planes actually, my mother and I are diabetic. We also just ordered a diabetic meal so planes these days actually have specific meals not just for diabetics which is great and to your point you get service fast which is really nice. I had a really hard time when I switched my diets around and I did it for 15 months a really long time and my hardest thing Doctor Neal was actually television. Like you are watching something and up pops, that cheesy drippy pizza or all these restaurants have these amazing looking foods. Any suggestions on how you could handle. So what I did I would basically either only watch Netflix where there was no ads and so I couldn’t possibly be tempted and mine was chocolate if I saw anything with chocolate I just literally had to run out and get some. What recommendations?
[03:13] DR NEAL BARNARD: What you are saying is true. Half the commercials are for burgers, better piles higher or cheesy things or candy or sodas or whatever. Everybody handles it differently; one way of doing it is to mute it and not watching the commercials. But another way of doing it is keep watching because what you will notice that after the food commercial is done, the other half of the commercials are for medicines all the health problems that you are going to have from eating that. And so if you have diabetes go for it with this medication and that medication you thinking what kind of insane world is this. It makes those burgers look not so good.
[03:54] REENA JADHAV: And I love those disclaimers at the end- this medicine for your depression may give you depression, may kill you, may cause suicide. I love how half of the disclaimers basically say that the medicine doesn’t really work.
[04:10] DR NEAL BARNARD: Everyone is trying to sell you something so be aware of that and it makes those junk food look not so good. And I kind of tell you my good friend Mary Lou always says, “Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels”, and that’s the truth.
[04:25] REENA JADHAV: So true. All right, everyone we are going to see you on the next one for troubleshooting because of course there is never a diet you are on that doesn’t end up with some trouble so make sure you tune into that one.
