[00:01] REENA JADHAV: Doctor Tom how do we fix our gut that are leaking?
[00:24] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: The first thing we have to understand there are lots of packets out there and products and I have had so many doctors come up to me in seminars and say, ‘I give glutamine for leaking gut’. And they stand there like okay that’s good! But glutamine doesn’t turn the genes on to heal the gut that vitamin D does or that curcumin does, that there is no, there is one product, there is only one, there is one and I’ll talk about that but what’s most important to understand is that you can give products to heal the intestinal permeability and the studies are pretty clear that this products can help but the environment that the intestinal permeability is in the tube itself; the inside of the tube, the microbiome you have to change the microbiome because if you have a disease you have got a disease microbiome that disease developed over time because the microbiome that you have allowed that disease to develop over time. So in your case you had colon cancer and your microbiome allowed that to occur, there is no way you would have got to the health that you currently have unless you also addressed your microbiome. So that means what we talked about previously with the pre and the pro-biotics is a critical component to set the stage to heal intestinal permeability. And then of course we talked just a little bit of wheat and that everyone gets tears in the cheese cloth when they eat wheat; so you have to get the wheat out of there. There many other foods that may trigger intestinal permeability if you have a sensitivity to them so you have to find out what those are but the first and most important thing is the awareness that you are on the path to rebuild a healthier microbiome. That’s really critical you know when you don’t get that in five minutes or ten minutes. Say again!
[02:41] REENA JADHAV: How long does it take to heal someone from a leaking gut or heal a leaking gut?
[02:45] DR. THOMAS O’BRYAN: Realistically, you can see changes on repeat testing within two months, two to three months but if they don’t continue the process it will come back, it can come back again, you can’t go back to the old way of living that’s going upstream you have to figure out what fell in the river and make sure you don’t go down that river. You just can’t do that, but in terms of the nutrients that help heal intestinal permeability, there are many there are many good studies what I’m about to tell you is by no means exclusive this are just the ones that have a whole lot of studies behind them and they work in unison really well. So the first is vitamin D; if you think of intestinal permeability- intestinal permeability is like a penname canal that the gates open into the lumen and food comes in the gates close, the immune system checks out what is this thing coming in here then the back gates open the food goes further down then those gates close the immune system checks again what is this thing and it’s the opening and closing of a number of gates for foods and nutrients to come through the walls of the intestine in to the blood stream through the cheese cloth and getting in there. Vitamin D controls the opening and the closing of the gates so that’s why vitamin D is so important and for taking vitamin D to help with intestinal permeability you don’t want to take the liquids that absorb under your tongue; those are really good for systemic vitamin D but you want the capsules or the tablet they go down in the gut because that’s where you want the vitamin D is in the gut to help with intestinal permeability. Now the liquid vitamin D I recommended a lot is called mycolic because it’s absorbed much better for systemic health and every tissue in your body needs vitamin D and so in general that’s more comprehensive form to take but for healing the gut you want the capsules or the tablet to get down there, vitamin D. The next is the active ingredient in the spiced turmeric is called curcumin and curcumin is the most potent natural anti-inflammatory that I have ever seen, there are hundreds and hundreds of studies on it and it turns on genes that vitamin D does not, so curcumin. The next is fish oils; the good fats from fish EPA, DHA they are anti-inflammatory they calms down the fire in the gut and they stimulate the immune system to heal the intestinal permeability. The next is zinc Cana seeds- zinc Cana seeds there are 18 different types of zinc, zinc Cana seeds is the type that has great benefits for your gastrointestinal tract to help heal damage gastrointestinal tracts. The next is and the biggest cohune is colostrum- colostrum you know is the first three days of mothers breast milk is not milk is colostrum and colostrum is the one that turns on all the genes in the gut that says close intestinal permeability, fill the receptors for the good bacteria so that all that good bacteria can lock in on the lining, inside lining of the gut and then colonize and build nice strong families of bacteria colostrums does all of that. And there is one type of colostrum that is head or shoulders the best I have ever found, my friend Doctor Andrew Ketch was born and raised on a dairy farm in New Zealand and he learned really quick if you don’t feed this calves colostrums they die within a week they die, you can’t give them milk. And then he learned that humans that were sick if they took colostrum they got better so he decided he was going to dedicate his life to making the best colostrum in the world. He went to Oxford and got a PHD in mechanical and chemical engineering and I said Andrew I get it Oxford PHD way to go man! Hi five way to go! But mechanical engineering what? What? Then he said, ‘well Tom I knew I was going to make the best colostrum in the world and no one knows how to do it and so I was going to have to learn how to build the equipment to do it’. So he spend eight years to do this, his colostrum is so good; three governments in Africa, three countries in Africa licensed his colostrum as the first treatment of choice that they pay for when somebody is diagnosed with HIV, that’s the same colostrum that’s on my website is called GS-immune restore and it restores your immune system. So there is only one thing you are going to take to heal the gut along with the pre and the probiotics and stop the foods that are throwing gasoline in the fire, is that colostrums there is nothing like it in the planet.
[08:13] REENA JADHAV: Interesting you say that because I took the sovereign labs colostrum for about a year and I was not aware that there was a better formula so I am going to definitely check that out and it is not something I have taken in a while so I think it is time for me to kind of do a maintenance dosage of it and will have to take that on an empty stomach alright.
[08:34] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: No, you do not have to not at all. My wife makes a smoothie out of it. She puts it in our smoothie drink with our vegetables and stuff so it is great for that. She also does it sometimes plain just with some water and a little hand mixer and she puts some apple sauce, oh that is the other thing I almost forgot to heal the gut. In England, this is from my friends Doctors Michael Ash and Antony Heinz in London; they called it-stewed apples I called it apple sauce. So you take some apples I take 4-5 apples organic, wash them off but leave the skins on, dice them up, throw the seeds away and you dice them up and throw them in a pan, add water about a third the height of the apples. Throw some cinnamon in, bring it to a boil let it boil in about 5-6 minutes something like that. You look in there and when you see a shine on the skin, when it is starting to shine turn it off you are done. The shine you are releasing the pectin from the apples. Now pectin when you eat pectin it increases the really good guide in your gut called the intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) and intestinal alkaline phosphatase is a really good guide for you because it prevents the bad bacteria from getting into your gut, It stimulates the healing genes to repair the intestinal permeability, It feeds the good bacteria so my patients have 2 tablespoons a day and if you are a 200-pound person, you have 4 tablespoons a day. It is not specific the amount but you do not need eat a big bowl but every day you just have a couple spoonsful of apple sauce and another little piece of the puzzle that you are turning the genes on to heal, reduce inflammation and rebuild a healthier microbiome.
[10:36] REEENA JADHAV: I love it such simple easy to do things, our grandparents used to do right. If you go back to our ancestors, apple sauce, apple pie, apple stewed.
[10:49] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: An apple a day keeps the doctor away this is why because it heals intestinal permeability. It increases intestinal alkaline phosphatase and heals intestinal permeability. That is the mechanism.
[11:01] REENA JADHAV: Wow! Now we have the answer as to why an apple a day makes a lot of sense. In addition to healing the leaking gut, autoimmune has a lot more components too. What else do we need to look out for, what else can we do?
[11:14] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: The most important thing in this short time that we had together if you give me 10 hours. Yes sounds great, yeah but the most important thing that you can do is embrace the understanding. It is going to take you 6 months to learn at 1 hour a week just 1 hour a week or well a day whatever you could allocate but just 1 hour to go back upstream and look at all of the different things that are throwing gasoline on the fire of your life. We talked about air, we talked about plastic, we talked about, and do you know anyone whose life was saved by sleeping under flame retarded bedding? But we breathe that stuff in every night and out gases every night and you are breathing that, you cannot tell because like when you are pumping gas sometimes you are standing there and you can smell the gas- that is benzene. Benzene is a neurotoxin to your brain and we just stand there we smell the gas while it is going so what do you do, walk around the other side of the hose on your upwind and you do not smell it anymore. But is going to take you months to start thinking like that, what am I smelling it is going to take months to train yourself to think differently how to be kind to yourself and take care of this body. That is the most important thing if you can embrace the idea ‘base hits when the ball game’, I want to learn new base hits every week just a couple of base hits in 6 months to a year you have got this down you have got it down.
[13:07] REENA JADHAV: I love how you say its reframing the context and listening to you I am thinking you are almost saying get out of the defensive, defend to yourself because you are under attack.
[13:21] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: You are under attack. You know exactly I have never thought of it that way but we are.
[13:25] REENA JADHAV: We are right. I did not think of it until listening to you and I am saying wait a minute we are under attack from the water we drink to the air we breathe to the things we watch by the review we have not talked about that yet the emotional of evil that when we watch stuff that is in display on television to the clothes we put on to the makeup we wear to the food we eat to the drinks. All of it is actually attacking us.
[13:50] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: That is right that is actually right. Let me give you one more example if I may one more. The most common autoimmune disease is thyroid dysfunction and hashimoto’s and it is 9 times more in women than men in all of that are. Mrs. patient when you are on the elevator of a hotel, when the elevator doors open, can you tell the swimming pools is on that floor right away? And so many people say, “Oh yes”. You are sensitive to chlorine, you are smelling the chlorine. Now why is it important? Because there are three chemicals. The way our hormones work, they are travelling in the bloodstream. Hormones are in the bloodstream, they go by a cell, and there is a receptor site on the cell facing out into the bloodstream. The receptor site is like a catcher smith and the pitcher throws the balls to the catcher so they are receptor sites for every hormone. So estrogen goes into an estrogen receptor site it won’t go into a thyroid receptor site. Testosterone goes into a testosterone receptor site. It won’t go into an estrogen receptor site; so all the hormones have receptors sitting on the outside of the cell facing the bloodstream. There are only two substances for which there are receptor sites on every cell of your body. There are only two substances as far as I know there is only two one is Vitamin D- that is how important Vitamin D is to every cell of your body. We will have a session of Vitamin D in the future, the other is thyroid hormone. Every cell in your body needs thyroid hormone why? Because thyroid hormone is thermostat on the wall of every cell of your body determining how hot that cell works .That is called your metabolism and just like in your house you turn the temperature down at night while you are sleeping to save the fuel and then it automatically turns back up in the morning before when it gets up- that is your thyroid hormone. So people that have thyroid imbalances, they have got cold hands and feet, they sometimes wear socks to bed, they feel sluggish, they are chilled often, they cannot lose weight even if they do not eat for 2-3 days they cannot lose weight and those are thyroid type symptoms there are many many symptoms of thyroid but it is because the thermostat is turned down. Now there are 3 chemicals that sit in thyroid receptor sites they are attracted to and they sit in thyroid receptor sites and they do not break down and go away they just sit there and if you have got these chemicals sitting in the thyroid receptor sites, when thyroid hormone comes by it is like the pitcher throws a fast ball to the catcher but he still has three baseball in his glove-the baseball just bounces back up. These are people that have blood tests for thyroid hormones and it is normal but they have got all thyroid symptoms. Exactly it is because the thyroid hormone is not getting in the cell because the cells are all blocked out. Can you smell chlorine oh yeah I smell chlorine well that is why it is because those three chemicals are chlorine, fluoride and bromine. Bromine is in bread. Chlorine, fluoride and bromine so people that have any of those types of symptoms they need chlorine shower filters because that is where you get more chlorine than anywhere else is you inhale it in the steam in the shower.
[17:24] REENA JADHAV: Twenty minutes a day, maybe sometimes twice a day.
[17:27] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: Yeah. So that is an example of the environment and when you learn this and then you go on to whole broods, you go on to consumer reports and look at the reports on chlorine shower filters and they will tell you which ones look to be the best and which ones how long they last. You replace the filter yourself; they are so easy to put on. You unscrew the showerhead, you put the whole filter on there, and then you screw the showerhead on the other side of it. It is really easy and then every 6 months you just change the filter inside that unit. It is easy to do but that is a base hit and when you do that, you will notice within a couple of weeks your hair has a nice shine to it, your skin feels softer because you are not being exposed to all that chlorine.
[18:15] REENA JADHAV: That’s on my to-do-list now for next week. That makes a lot of sense. The other two chemicals fluoride- so that is the toothpaste right. The cavities fluoride, we do not need fluoride in our toothpaste. Do we Doctor Tom?
[18:27] DR THOMAS O’BRYAN: We do not. If you read, the history of where fluoride came from, it was a garbage product from the chemical industry and someone had the bright idea, let’s see if we can put in the toothpaste because I think it is an antibacterial so let’s try it lets see if we can put in the toothpaste and in the water because there is fluoride in the water also and it is just that there is so much evidence at how dangerous it is for us to have fluoride and chlorine. I am not saying chlorine is not necessary, chlorine is necessary by all means but then before the water gets to you and your family, you filter it out. So if you can afford it you get a whole house water filtration system so that means all the sinks when you are brushing your teeth, in the kitchen the water you are drinking and in the shower is all chlorine free.
